The expansion of fiber networks globally has created new applications such as discovering new energy sources, monitoring events around highways and tracking cicadas. In Utah, fiber lines are enabling the state to spot and monitor crashes, travel times, avalanches and speeds.

Budget cuts will reduce spending on California's middle-mile network by $1.5 billion even as construction has begun on the two-year-old project. Officials are studying how to pare back the proposed 10,000-mile effort, says Mark Monroe of the Middle-Mile Broadband Initiative.

State and local government groups urged congressional leaders to preserve the $100 million in funds appropriated in the 2021 Infrastructure Act for cybersecurity programs. The seven groups making the push said they were reacting to reports that some in Congress may attempt to rescind the grants.

  • The U.S. Supreme Court denied Consumer’s Research, et al.'s petitions for writ of certiorari that challenged decisions regarding the FCC’s USF quarterly contribution factors.
     

  • The Office of Managing Director announced the proposed universal service contribution factor for the third quarter of 2024 will be 34.4%, up from the previous quarter’s 32.8%.
     

  • Consumers’ Research, et al. filed objections to the proposed third quarter 2024 USF contribution factor.
     

  • NTIA approved initial proposals for Illinois, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Colorado and New Hampshire for the BEAD Program, which will enable them to request access to funding and begin implementation of the program.
     

  • The House Appropriations Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Subcommittee approved its fiscal year 2025 bill, which includes an additional $105.8 million for the ReConnect Program.
     

  • The ACAM Broadband Coalition, et al. discussed how guidance on how the Enhanced Alternative Connect America Cost Model Program adjustment process would be conducted.
     

  • NTCA discussed broadband availability mapping and Broadband Data Collection processes.
     

  • Responses to motions to transfer and stay the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit case challenging the order reclassifying broadband as Title II are due June 17 and 18, 2024, respectively. Replies are due June 21, 2024.
     

  • Comments on the NPRM on 2024 regulatory fees are due July 15, 2024. Replies are due July 29, 2024.

Nokia has enhanced the protection it offers telecoms against distributed denial of service attacks, citing the rising number and complexity of incidents. New features include an upgraded firewall, an AI-based big data processing platform, better DNS server security and a global map of DDoS botnets.

Lumen Technologies is touting its ExaSwitch platform that it has rolled out in several large cities as a linchpin to the telecom's strategy to allow network users to circumvent third parties in routing traffic. The company expects to bring ExaSwitch to all of its top markets with large internet hubs.
